## **The Gaudí Question** **The Gaudí Question** is a contemporary architectural debate concerning the extent to which Antoni Gaudí’s work should be understood as architecture, sculpture, religious expression, or a deliberate rejection of conventional architectural aesthetics. The debate has become increasingly relevant as Barcelona continues to complete and reinterpret Gaudí's unfinished projects nearly a century after his death. Gaudí is widely regarded as the most prominent architect of Catalan Modernisme. Seven of his works in and around Barcelona are recognised by UNESCO as World Heritage, which describes his architecture as an “exceptional creative contribution” to the development of modern architecture and construction technology. Yet Gaudí's reputation has never been entirely consensual. ## Genius or architectural excess? Gaudí's architecture deliberately rejected the straight line, symmetrical façade and restrained ornamentation associated with much of European architecture of his period. His buildings incorporated irregular forms, biological motifs, fragmented ceramics, sculptural façades and structures inspired by natural systems. Gaudí himself reportedly argued that architecture should operate according to the laws of nature. One frequently attributed statement is: *“Architecture creates the organism. Therefore, it must be governed by a law in harmony with those of nature.”* his philosophy has contributed to his reputation as a visionary. It has also provided ammunition for those who regard his work as excessive, theatrical or deliberately irrational. The controversy was particularly evident in reactions to the Sagrada Família. Architectural historian Nikolaus Pevsner criticised the organic appearance of Gaudí's buildings, while George Orwell famously described the Sagrada Família as “one of the most hideous buildings in the world.” By contrast, architect Louis Sullivan praised it as “the greatest piece of creative architecture in the last twenty-five years.” The disagreement raises a question that has never been completely resolved: **if architecture provokes radically opposing reactions, does that indicate failure—or success?** ## Architecture as nature Gaudí's buildings are frequently described as imitations of nature, although this interpretation can be misleading. He did not simply copy trees, bones, shells or animals. Instead, he studied their structural principles. The interior of the Sagrada Família, for example, uses columns that branch like trees. The result is simultaneously structural, symbolic and theatrical. The Catalan heritage authorities describe the interior as resembling a “vast stone forest.” This has led some contemporary interpretations to position Gaudí as a precursor to biomimicry and computational architecture. However, such interpretations are themselves controversial. Applying contemporary technological concepts to Gaudí can make him appear more futuristic than he actually was. His architecture was also deeply religious, culturally Catalan and rooted in nineteenth-century craft traditions. UNESCO characterises his work as a synthesis of several nineteenth-century movements, including Arts and Crafts, Symbolism, Expressionism and Rationalism. ## The unfinished problem The most controversial aspect of Gaudí's legacy may not be what he built, but what happened after his death. Gaudí died in 1926 without completing the Sagrada Família. Construction subsequently continued according to surviving drawings, models and interpretations of his intentions. UNESCO acknowledges that construction remains part of the site's history and states that the work is being completed according to evidence and guidelines intended to reconstruct Gaudí's project. But reconstruction raises an uncomfortable question: **At what point does finishing Gaudí's architecture become creating architecture in Gaudí's name?** The question is particularly significant because much of Gaudí's workshop material was destroyed during the Spanish Civil War. The loss of drawings and models means that some aspects of his intended design cannot be established with absolute certainty. Consequently, every new element added to the Sagrada Família exists somewhere between historical reconstruction and contemporary interpretation. Consequently, every new element added to the Sagrada Família exists somewhere between **historical reconstruction and contemporary interpretation**. Gaudí left the building unfinished, leaving behind drawings, models and ideas rather than a completed blueprint. Later architects must therefore make decisions that Gaudí himself never made. This raises a fundamental question of authorship: **when does reconstructing Gaudí's vision become creating something new in his name?** The paradox is that the more successfully the Sagrada Família is completed, the further it moves from the historical reality of Gaudí's unfinished project. Every new stone may preserve his vision, but it also inevitably reflects the technology, values and imagination of the present. The Sagrada Família is therefore not simply a monument to Gaudí. It is a conversation between Gaudí and the generations that came after him. ## A monument to Gaudí—or to Barcelona? The Sagrada Família has gradually become more than a religious building. It is an international symbol of Barcelona and one of the city's dominant visual identities. This creates another paradox. Gaudí's architecture was intensely personal and, in many respects, anti-standardised. Yet his buildings have become among the most recognisable and commercially reproduced images in the world. The architect who rejected conventional architectural language has therefore become the subject of one of the world's most recognisable visual brands. The tension is particularly visible in Barcelona, where Gaudí's buildings simultaneously function as places of worship, architectural monuments, tourist attractions and economic assets. ## The political Gaudí Gaudí's legacy is also inseparable from Catalan cultural identity. He participated in the Catalan Renaixença and incorporated Catalan symbols into his architecture. Park Güell, commissioned by Eusebi Güell, was conceived partly within a broader project of Catalan cultural aspiration. Gaudí himself was arrested in 1924 after refusing to comply with police demands during a demonstration connected with restrictions on the Catalan language. According to accounts of the incident, he continued speaking Catalan when questioned by the authorities. This complicates the popular image of Gaudí as simply a mystical architect inspired by nature and religion. He was also a product of a particular political and cultural moment. ## Legacy The continuing fascination with Gaudí may therefore derive precisely from the contradictions within his work. He was simultaneously modern and traditional, religious and experimental, individualistic and deeply connected to Catalan culture, technically rigorous and visually extravagant. His buildings can appear ancient and futuristic at the same time. Perhaps the most controversial interpretation of Gaudí is therefore not that he was a genius, but that **the category of “genius” itself makes his work easier to understand than it deserves to be**. Calling Gaudí a genius can close the discussion. Calling him controversial keeps it open. And almost a century after his death, Barcelona continues to build inside that argument.
