Hiram "Hank" Williams (1923-1953) was an American singer-songwriter. He helped transform country music from regional folk music to mainstream art. He was known as "[Hillbilly Shakespeare](https://www.pbs.org/kenburns/country-music/episode-3-the-hillbilly-shakespeare-1945-1953)" because of his well-written and deeply personal songwriting, addressing universal themes of love and loss.

He struggled with alcoholism and drug use, and died at age 29 of heart failure. He was posthumously inducted into multiple halls of fame.
